Dragon Boat Communities
Dragon Boat is one of the fastest growing water sports in the world. The sport is rooted in its culture, heritage, history and tradition about 2000 years ago in Southern area of China. It was used mostly for ceremonial purpose. It was not recognized and organized as a sport until 1976 when overseas crews were invited to race in the traditional Hong Kong Festival Races, for the very first time. It is from this event and date that the Members of the International Dragon Boat Federation (IDBF) accept and record that the 'modern era' of dragon boating began.
Various regional Federation then began to form to help provide direction, governance and support for the sport of dragon boating: European Dragon Boat Federation, Asian Dragon Boat Federation, US Dragon Boat Federation and so forth. In 1991, the International Dragon Boat Federation is formed to provide the overall guidance, governance and direction for the sport of dragon boating.
